What is it?

The contraceptive effect of Alesse is achieved due to the implementation of several mechanisms. The most significant of these mechanisms is considered ovulation inhibition. The second is the viscosity increase of uterine secretions. It contributes for much more difficult penetration
of spermatozoa to the uterine cavity.

Women with a prescription of oral combined contraceptives, the menstruation becomes more regular. It is deprived of pain and intensity. Alesse reduces the risk of iron deficiency anemia. There is a confirmed fact the use of such birth control pills eliminates the risk of endometrial and ovarian cancer considerably.

How long does it take to work?

Ethinyl Estradiol

After application, it is completely and rapidly absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract. The maximum plasma concentration is reached within 1.5 hours. It has a property to penetrate into breast milk. Metabolized in the intestinal wall and liver. The effective half-life is 28 hours. 40% is eliminated by kidneys and 60% – with excrements.

After application, this component is absorbed quickly and completely. Its bioavailability is equal to 100%. The maximum plasma concentration is reached within 1-1.5 hours. It binds to plasma proteins by 97.5%. It is metabolized in the liver. The effective half-life is almost 25 hours. It is eliminated by kidneys.

How does it work?

The mechanism of Alesse birth control action is based on the pharmacological properties of active components. The drug is able to block the release factors of the hypothalamus (luteinizing and follicle-stimulating hormone). It also inhibits gonadotropic hormones’ secretion by the pituitary gland. As a result of such properties, the maturation of the follicle and its rupture are slowed down. Thus, the active components (levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol) inhibit ovulation, preventing fertilization and pregnancy. In addition, the gestagen component – levonorgestrel – enhances cervical secretions’ viscosity. It results in difficult spermatozoa penetration into the uterine cavity. It also prevents implantation of a fertilized egg due to the changes in the endometrium structure.

How to use?

If a woman in the previous menstruation cycle did not apply birth control medications, the doctor did not prescribe in a different way, the first pill should be taken on the 1st day of the menstrual cycle. The course lasts for 21 days. Then the drug is recommended to continue with placebo pills for 7 days, during which menstrual-like bleeding takes place. After that, start the next package with white tablets for 21 days, and then 7 placebo tablets without a break. Thus, each cycle begins on the same day of the week.

When is it effective?

If Alesse is used correctly, the Pearl Index (an indicator reflecting the pregnancy frequency in 100 women during the year within the period of using a contraceptive) is less than 1. If you miss the birth control pills or you misuse it, the Pearl index may increase.

Alesse is taken 1 time a day, regardless of the time of eating for 21 days with no break for 7 days. The course begins on day 1 or 5 of the menstrual cycle. The next package of the drug should be started regardless of the duration of menstruation.

  • The highest daily dose: 1 tablet containing 0.10 mg of levonorgestrel and 0.02 mg of ethinyl estradiol.
  • The highest single dose: 1 tablet (2 tablets after missing doses).

Missed pills

If the pill was missed within the prescribed period, then it should be taken within the next 12 hours. In this case, there is no need to use additional means of contraception. The remaining pills are recommended to be taken at the habitual time. If more than 12 hours have passed, you should take the last missed pill (missing the rest of the untaken pills) and continue taking the drug as prescribed. In this case, in the next 7 days, it is necessary to take additional methods of contraception (barrier methods, spermicides).
